Finds images, audio files, fonts and 3D meshes that are byte-identical to another file somewhere else in your project, so you can keep one copy and reclaim the wasted space — without leaving the editor.

The problem

Projects accumulate exact duplicate binary files all the time: an asset copy-pasted into a new folder "just to try something", the same SFX imported twice under different names, a texture re-exported from an external tool into a new path instead of overwriting the old one. None of it shows up as an error. It just sits there, bloating your project size and your exported build, until someone goes looking by hand.

What it does

Scans every .png .jpg .jpeg .bmp .tga .webp .svg .exr .hdr .wav .ogg .mp3 .ttf .otf .woff .woff2 .glb .gltf .obj .fbx .dae file under res:// and groups files whose full content hashes match exactly (Godot's own FileAccess.get_md5) — never a visual or "looks similar" guess. A texture re-exported at a different compression level has a different hash and is correctly left alone. Shows each duplicate group's copy count, size and wasted space, sorted worst offender first. Double-click a group to see every path it was found at. "Export Markdown" writes a report for a cleanup PR. Zero-byte files are never compared against each other.

How this compares

Godot Project Doctor (also on this store) is a genuinely useful project-health checker, but what it flags as "duplicate" is duplicate uid:// IDs between resource files — a different bug with a different fix. It doesn't hash file content, so an identical PNG copy-pasted under a new name isn't its concern.

BuildFootprint (itch.io) already does real duplicate-content detection by hashing, but it's a separate browser app you point at an exported folder from outside Godot. Run against a live project instead of a build, a generic tool like that has no idea .godot/imported/ is Godot's own regenerated cache, and will tell you to "clean up" duplicates inside it — advice that does nothing useful and comes right back next time you open the project. This plugin only ever reads res:// through Godot's own DirAccess, skips .godot/.import/.git by construction, and reports results with the same res://... paths the FileSystem dock already shows you — one click, inside the editor, nothing to export or upload anywhere.

Tested against a real project

test_project/ in the repo ships the exact fixtures this was verified against on Godot 4.7.2, headless: a PNG duplicated 3 ways (one copy nested in a subfolder, flagged), a WAV duplicated 2 ways (flagged), a unique PNG (not flagged), the first PNG re-exported at a different compression level — different bytes, same visual content (correctly not flagged), two separate 0-byte PNG files (correctly not flagged against each other), and a copy of the duplicated PNG planted inside .godot/imported/ (correctly excluded from the scan entirely).

Setup

Drop addons/duplicate_asset_finder into your project's addons/ folder, enable Duplicate Asset Finder under Project > Project Settings > Plugins, then open the new dock tab.
