In-editor 3D level modeling for Godot 4. Draw the geometry, edit it, texture it, and ship it. Because you're worth it.

Unibuilder is for blockouts and greyboxing but you can also use it for full on level editing like I do because you like that chunky indie aesthetic. It's great for walls, trim, pipes, stairs, all that jazz. Every object is a real MeshInstance3D, so it renders, lightmaps and collides like anything else in your scene.

This is the free demo. Every modeling feature is here, for learning and small scenes. It is limited to 12 meshes per scene and 500 faces per mesh, and it cannot bake or export. Everything you build in the demo opens unchanged in the full version. Once the asset store supports paid plugins, I'll fix that here.

Draw shapes into the viewport

Pick a shape from the toolbar's Add menu, press and drag the base on the grid, pull out the height, click. The new object is selected and the next draw chains straight on.

Edit vertices, edges and faces

Four edit modes (Object, Vertex, Edge, Face) with click, Shift-click and marquee selection, X-ray select-through, hover highlighting, loop and ring selection on a double click, Grow, Shrink, Invert, Select All, Select Similar, Select Coplanar and Select Holes. Switching modes converts the selection instead of dropping it.

Move, rotate and scale gizmos work on elements and on whole objects, in Global, Local or face-Normal orientation. Shift-drag a face to extrude it. Hold V while moving to snap a vertex exactly onto another vertex, in the same mesh or in a different object. Proportional editing drags neighbours along with a falloff you can adjust mid-drag with the wheel.

A grid (ooo fancy)

The reference grid draws on any axis plane. Halve or double the step with [ and ]. Align Grid puts the grid onto the face or vertex you have selected. Snapping applies to everything because why wouldn't it?

Texturing

  • Automatic UVs on every face
  • Material mode moves, rotates and scales the texture directly on the faces in the viewport.
  • A 2D UV editor for when you want to mess with s**t
  • Materials per face. Drop a material from the FileSystem dock onto a face, or click a swatch in the per-project material palette.
  • Smoothing groups per face, and a Smooth toggle on the curved shapes.
  • Vertex paint with a brush (radius, strength, softness) or per-face fill, colour and alpha channels separately, an eyedropper, and swatches. A ready-made blend material mixes two full PBR layers (albedo, normal, roughness, metallic, AO, emission, height, parallax) by the painted alpha, with height-based blending if you want it. Import either layer from an existing StandardMaterial3D.

Game-ready output

  • Collision generated automatically per object: convex, trimesh or a smooth ramp wedge for stairs, with collision layers and masks on the node.
  • Collider and Trigger volumes: mark a mesh as invisible collision or as an Area3D trigger. It shows tinted in the editor and hides itself in the game.
  • Lightmap UV2 on every live mesh, kept up to date as you edit, so LightmapGI works without baking the mesh
  • In the full version: Bake to a plain MeshInstance3D with collision and UV2, export OBJ or glTF, and Convert to Unibuilder to turn any existing triangle mesh into editable n-gon faces (sometimes this sucks, just so you know)

Good dev experience (I hope)

  • Pure GDScript.
  • Every action is exactly one editor undo step.
  • Panels float over the viewport or dock beside it
  • Shortcuts as best as I can

Requirements and installation

Godot 4.7 or later, any platform. It might work on less but I havent tested it. I know some people are using it on 4.6

  1. Copy addons/unibuilder/ into your project's addons/ folder.
  2. Open Project, Project Settings, Plugins, and enable Unibuilder.
  3. The toolbar appears above the 3D viewport. Open Add, pick Cube, and GO GO GO.

Unibuilder is a commercial plugin distributed under its own licence (see LICENSE.txt in the addon). Use it in as many projects as you like; games you ship with it carry no obligations. The addon itself may not be redistributed.

So far, it's okay. I wonder how much usage AI has played in creating it though. If you could, I suggest either claming on the live pallete so that it doesn't keep offcentering the viewports- It's pain

by far the best level making tool I've been able to use in godot. It's still v1 so it's missing some features I'd usually be doing in blender, but it's still really good. Excited for newer versions of this addon for sures!
