Create and Paint Without Leaving Godot

GDDraw is an editor plugin for creating 2D PNG assets and painting albedo textures directly on supported 3D models. It is designed for quick prototyping, texture adjustments, and asset iteration without constantly switching between Godot and an external image editor.

2D Drawing

Create and edit transparent PNG images using familiar drawing tools:

  • Brush and eraser
  • Solid, Dither, Pattern, and Custom Image fills
  • Line, rectangle, and ellipse tools
  • Editable raster text with font, size, alignment, wrapping, background, and rotation controls
  • Eyedropper and foreground/background color controls
  • Rectangular and lasso selections
  • Crop, scale, rotate, mirror, copy, cut, and paste
  • Corner to Corner, From Start Point, and From Canvas Center shape modes
  • Configurable grids, snapping, and tile previews
  • Undo and redo with exact document-change tracking

Save your work as a PNG or create a Sprite2D from the current image directly inside your scene.

Styled Fills

The Paint Bucket includes several ways to fill and restyle regions:

  • Solid colors
  • Configurable dithering
  • Repeating line, dot, checkerboard, and Bayer patterns
  • Custom images from project files, external files, selections, or the clipboard
  • Original color, alpha-mask, and two-color mask modes
  • Adjustable scale, spacing, rotation, offsets, repetition, and sampling
  • Live previews before applying changes

Styled fills retain the existing tolerance, contiguous, global, replace-color, selection, alpha-lock, and undo behavior.

3D Texture Painting

Select a supported MeshInstance3D or CSG surface and paint its albedo texture from within the Godot editor.

GDDraw provides:

  • Direct brush and eraser painting on supported 3D surfaces
  • Line, rectangle, and ellipse painting across compatible UV-connected surfaces
  • 2D, 3D, horizontal split, and vertical split workspace layouts
  • Live linked 2D and 3D previews
  • UV edge and connected-island overlays
  • Adjustable preview lighting and an optional color-accurate unshaded view
  • A perspective grid, transform controls, and a private preview gizmo
  • Godot-style orbit, pan, zoom, and freelook navigation
  • Material and texture creation with explicit confirmation
  • PNG saving and texture assignment through Godot’s undo/redo system
  • Protection against accidentally discarding unsaved 2D or 3D work

Your independent 2D workspace is preserved when you begin or end a 3D texture-painting session. Active 3D sessions can also survive scene-tab changes or the temporary loss of their original source node.

Create Textured Godot Nodes

Move your work into the current scene without leaving GDDraw:

  • Create a Sprite2D from the current saved image
  • Create textured CSGBox3D, CSGSphere3D, and CSGCylinder3D nodes
  • Optionally assign the current image
  • Optionally enable native CSG collision
  • Optionally select the newly created node
  • Undo node, material, texture, collision, and selection changes as one editor action

Generated textures are stored as project assets and remain available if the scene operation is undone.

Safe In-Editor Updates

GDDraw can check for stable releases from its official GitHub repository.

Updates remain under your control:

  • Automatic checks only notify you when a newer stable release is available
  • Downloads require explicit confirmation
  • Packages are staged and validated before installation
  • Installed files are backed up before replacement
  • Failed installations can roll back to the verified previous package
  • Successful updates request one editor restart

GDDraw does not collect telemetry or send project names, paths, or user content.

Designed for Prototyping and Iteration

GDDraw shortens the path between an idea and a usable Godot asset. Sketch an image, create a sprite, add text and styled fills, adjust an existing texture, create textured CSG geometry, or paint changes while viewing them directly on the model.

Version 0.2.0

Version 0.2.0 expands the creative toolbox, adds styled fills and raster text, brings shape tools to supported 3D surfaces, improves the private 3D preview, expands textured CSG creation, and introduces safe in-editor updates.

GDDraw remains under active development on the road to version 1.0. Features, compatibility, and interface details may continue to evolve.

A video walkthrough demonstrating the complete workflow is coming soon.

Requirements and Current Limitations

  • Godot 4.4 or later; version 0.2.0 has been tested with Godot 4.4 through 4.7
  • Desktop editor builds
  • 3D painting currently targets albedo textures on supported StandardMaterial3D surfaces
  • Models require usable triangle UVs
  • Shader materials, additional texture channels, and multi-material CSG results are not currently supported
  • Dense seams, mirrored or shared UVs, and overlapping UV islands may require additional care
  • Active imported 3D texture sessions lock canvas resizing to protect the source texture
  • Independent 2D documents are currently saved as PNG files

Bug reports and feedback are welcome during development.
