A small house in three wings: west, centre and east. It comes with beds, paintings, and a night you switch on with N. Walk through the side doorways to reach the next wing; step behind a wall and it hides your legs, the way top-down RPGs do it.

What's in the project

Three wings, each exported twice from the same layout: once by day, once by night. Night is a different palette and light; press N to crossfade between them.

Each wing has its own room.tscn: a ground TileMapLayer, a y-sorted pair of wall and side layers whose tiles carry y_sort_origin values from the wall bases, and a StaticBody2D with the collision already laid out. Nothing to paint or configure.

  • A CharacterBody2D walker with its origin at its feet (so the y-sorting works as exported), 8-direction facing from a 96 px sprite sheet, walk and jog.
  • Beds you can walk behind: each blocks the floor it stands on and sorts against you by its base row. Paintings hang on the wall faces.
  • Doorways that switch wings the moment your feet reach them, with the arrival point and facing on the other side. The exit is the entrance, walked the other way.
  • levels.json: where every wing, doorway, bed, painting and spawn point is, in one readable file. The scripts read it; change it and the house changes.

How it was made

The rooms are generated, not AI-drawn. A 3/4-view renderer works out the wall caps, faces, side faces and shadows from a text grid, a colour palette and a light angle, then writes the Godot TileSet and scene directly. Every generated pixel comes from those files and renders the same way every time.

The hand-made pixels are the beds, the paintings and the character under CC BY 4.0.

Controls

  • Arrow keys or WASD: move
  • Shift: jog
  • N: toggle night
  • Walk into a side doorway to change wing

Requirements

Godot 4.7 or newer (built with 4.4 but tested on 4.7.2), GL Compatibility renderer. Pixel snapping and nearest-neighbour filtering are already set in project.godot.

License

Code: Apache-2.0. Art: CC BY 4.0 (Walter Reid). Both license files and a NOTICE are included. Use it as a starting point for your own game; keep the notice and credit the art.
