A free grass-and-dirt starter set at 16x16, top-down. It is a genuine sample of a larger series, not a crippled one: the dirt-on-grass transition is the complete 47-mask blob set, because a blob set missing three masks is not a smaller product, it is a broken one, and you would find the hole in your map before we did.

What is in it

Grass fills 4 variants
Dirt fills 4 variants
Dirt-on-grass transition 47 masks, the complete blob set
Props 5: tree (2x2), bush, rock, stump, red flowers
Grounded props 4: the tree, bush, rock and stump again, each on its own grass with a contact shadow
Total 64 tiles

The Godot import is a real resource, not a note in a readme

importers/Godot/verdant-00-sample.tres is a TileSet with three TileSetAtlasSource entries. Drop it on a TileMapLayer and paint.

It is checked by loading it in Godot and making the engine count, rather than by trusting that the file looks right:

declared : 3 sources, 64 tiles, 2 multi-cell
Godot built : 3 sources, 64 tiles, 2 multi-cell footprints, all exact

Measured in Godot 4.7.2 (headless load and resource inspection, not the editor GUI). A .tres that declares tiles the engine silently drops is a real failure mode, so the check makes the engine report what it actually built.

The pack also ships a Tiled .tsx and an RPG Maker MZ A2 autotile sheet, plus every tile as a loose PNG and a packed sheet, so nothing here is locked to one engine.

Also in the download

  • tiles.json, a tile-to-role map, so the set is rebuildable in any engine.
  • A finished sample map as a PNG and as data (sample_map_01.json), so you can see how the pieces go together and rebuild it.
  • 4x4 repetition renders for every fill, so you can look for the grid line yourself.

How it is made, and the honest disclosure

Every tile is generated programmatically by our own software, from a hand-authored 25-colour palette, hand-authored motifs and hand-authored material rules. No diffusion or image-generation model was used, and no third-party artwork is incorporated. The generator's own source code was written with AI assistance, which is why this listing is marked as AI assisted. We would rather over-disclose than have you find out later.

Every pixel sits on the integer lattice in the declared palette. Nothing is scaled, filtered or blended anywhere in the pipeline.

Licence

Free, forever, for commercial and non-commercial work, on unlimited projects, with no royalty and no attribution required. You may modify and remix the tiles freely. The one thing you may not do is redistribute the pack itself as an asset pack. The full text ships as LICENSE.txt in the download.

The rest of the series

This sample is a subset of Verdant 01, tile for tile, so nothing you build on it needs replacing if you pick up the paid packs later. The series covers overworld, elevation, snow, desert, volcanic, gothic interiors, mire, town, harbour and more, and there is a generator that makes your own. The whole catalogue is at https://csaf.itch.io and this pack's own page is https://csaf.itch.io/verdant-00-sample
